<binEng> hi
<Downix> what's up?
<smkl> ack my c++ and java aren't working
11:00am
<Kaufmann> good
<Kaufmann> they're brain-damaged anyway
<Kaufmann> now all you have to do is get rid of your COBOL and VB
<smkl> every properly configured system must have c,c++ and java working
<Kaufmann> bah
<Kaufmann> UNIX is evil anyway

<smkl> woop now c++ and java are working
<eihrul> in what?
<smkl> in my formerly broken system
<eihrul> what is your system, then and now? :)
<smkl> still linux slackware 3.1
<eihrul> oh, that kind of broken
<KaufmannBRB> LOL!

<smkl> i had two glibc2s installed
<smkl> that caused some problems
<Kaufmann> I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I hate UNIX
<Kaufmann> LOL... two spammers murdered in NJ: http://www.cnn.com/US/9910/28/businessmen.killed.02.ap/index.html
<Downix> what's wrong with UNIX?
<Downix> .away
<Kaufmann> What isn't?
<Kaufmann> ?
<Downix> Name me something that's actuially "wrong" about it
-:- randobj [randobj@208.215.216.239] has joined #tunes
<binEng> It's not intensional; it allows links to be broken.
<Downix> You may not *like* UNIX, doesn't mean it's wrong.
<Kaufmann> Uhhhhrm
<Downix> binEng: Depends on the file system being used. In classical UFS, yes
<Kaufmann> What's wrong with UNIX
<Downix> In the new JFFS, no, links are dynamic
<binEng> I haven't heard about that, but I doubt textual references remain valid if you e.g. move a file.
<Downix> they do in the newer journaled file systems
<Kaufmann> Traditional file systems. Depends heavily on C. Not intensional. Nowhere near fine-grained enough. ACL-based. Very little support for reflectiveness.
<Kaufmann> I can go on
<Downix> Kaufmann: UNIX is also flexible, I've seen UNIX run w/ newer file systems, and even reflective systems attempted, such as MIT's XOK system
<Downix> it's dependend on C, you are right
<Downix> that's nothing wrong, just a design choice.
<Kaufmann> Down, that's wrong because it makes doing just about everything that is not completely low-level a real pain. I mean, if only the bootstrap code was in C I'd understand it, but this is ridiculous.
12:50pm
<Downix> Kaufmann: Nothing wrong with that since there are high-level derivitives of C that can be applied to UNIX's without issue.
<Downix> C may be low-level, but as a low-level system it is also flexible. There are very few things you cannot do in C if you devote enough time to figuring out how
<Kaufmann> Downix, don't give me C++ (or even ObjC). No matter what you say, the fact remains that all of the kernel and all of the core libraries are still written in C.
<Kaufmann> Downix, high-level reflective languages can be every bit as flexible as C.
<Downix> Kaufmann: depends on the UNIX varient. I've seen small UNIX kernels re-written in such systems as Java and D
<binEng> Flexibility is one thing, the amount of work you pay for constructing what you want is another.
<Downix> Kaufmann: I didn't say they couldn't, I just said that C has something.
<Downix> binEng: I've found C suits my needs fine, of course my needs are small
<Downix> The only thing I code is a terminal daemon
