<eihrul> anyone here?
<smkl> i am
<eihrul> hrmm, is it worth saving the segment registers at all in a flat address space operating system?
<eihrul> i can't find a good reason for doing so

<smkl> well, i don't know anything about OS implementation ....
<smkl> do you mean saving on task switch or something?
<smkl> is there something stopping a program using them for something else but addressing?
<eihrul> Fare: there?
<eihrul> smkl: well, they're more artifacts of the x86 architecture than anything useful :)
<smkl> only useful for running DOS
<eihrul> ya

<smkl> hello _QZ
<liar> anyone here good at networking?
<liar> hey smkl
<smkl> i have elite network connection now
<liar> 5 p2-450 machines with pci ne2000 cards and networked with a hub and doom is so slow its unplayable with 4 players, semi-ok with 3 and ok with 2
<liar> other games like halflife wont let 4 players into the game
<liar> and often drop one of the 3 players
<liar> any idea what the problem could be?
<smkl> nope
-:- liar has changed the topic on channel #Tunes to: Free Reflective Computing System <http://www.tunes.org> || http://www.aftersleeves.org/apostle/
10:40am
<liar> ugh
<smkl> it took 3 weeks for me to find out that the cable wasn't plugged
<liar> heh, what cable?
<smkl> 10BaseT at "campus"

<ElGato`> hi :D
<eihrul> lo
<Downix> hey
<ElGato`> apostle os doesn't look very special
<eihrul> nope...
<eihrul> they don't even have programmers it seems
<Downix> name special OS's then?
<ElGato`> tunes, retro, clementine :D
<eihrul> and half the buzzwords were on their page before they got a programmer :)
<liar> any of u good with networking?
<Downix> hehe
<ElGato`> tunes has been smart about being humble
* Downix/#tunes can network pretty well, as my systems connected through SCSI link shows
<liar> <liar> 5 p2-450 machines with pci ne2000 cards and networked with a hub and
<liar> doom is so slow its unplayable with 4 players, semi-ok with 3 and ok
<liar> with 2
<liar> <liar> other games like halflife wont let 4 players into the game
<liar> <liar> and often drop one of the 3 players
<liar> <liar> any idea what the problem could be?
<Downix> gnn
<Downix> gmm
<Downix> hmm
<Downix> I have no clue
<Tril> what doom client
<Downix> I do 4-player Quake 2 on my Amiga
<liar> we replaced the cable, the hub and we tried to see if 1 or 2 machines had a problem by not using them
<liar> Tril: dos
<Tril> what OS
<liar> win98
<Tril> use windoom
<liar> but its not the game
<liar> cuz we tried doom2, duke3d, and halflife
<Downix> how much RAM?
<Tril> you're using 10bT?
04:00pm
<Tril> well, if the computer hardware, the networking hardware, and the game soft are not hte problem, there is only one option left, WIN 98
<Tril> Replace that.
<Tril> or just reconfigure the Network control panel..
<Tril> you tried TCP/IP and IPX? Copying a file?
<liar> 64-128meg ram, 10baseT, they only have ipx, and they work fine in network neighborhood. the problem is when u have 3-4 of them going at once in games
<liar> 2 2player games seemed ok
<Tril> sound like crappy network cards
